The Barcelona HPV Course 2022

Adrià Curran is a staff physician of the Infectious Diseases Department and the coordinator of the Anal Dysplasia Screening Unit of Vall d’Hebron University Hospital. He has carried out specific training on HPV anal dysplasia in HIV patients at the University of San Francisco (CA, USA) with Prof. Joel Palefsky. He is a member of the International Anal Neoplasia Society. He participates as a researcher in multiple international clinical trials and has published more than 100 articles in national and international journals and book chapters on various aspects of HIV infection, HPV and its treatment.

He completed his specialty at the Hospital Universitari Germans Trias i Pujol, with a stay at the Infectious Diseases service of the La Pitié-Salpêtrière University Hospital in Paris-France. At the end of his specialty, he oriented his clinical practice to the treatment of infectious pathologies, mainly HIV-infected patients and associated pathologies, as well as infectious pathologies that are difficult to manage.

For more than 7 years, he dedicated himself to the study of pathologies related to Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infection in the HIV-infected population, a field in which he completed his doctoral thesis, finishing it in 2019. He obtained his degree in doctor of medicine with the highest qualification (Cum laude) for the publications he made in the field of prevention of anal cancer related to HPV infection, being the main author of the first publication worldwide that demonstrated the usefulness of anoscopy resolution as a prevention strategy for anal cancer.

During the COVID-19 epidemic, he led the first study that demonstrated the usefulness of screening with antigen tests to be able to carry out massive cultural events during the concerts of Love of Lesbian and the Sala Apolo in Barcelona, ​​events that had a great impact worldwide. and that their results were published in the prestigious journals Lancet ID and Annals of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Revollo has worked for three years as a volunteer with the NGO Médecins Sans Frontières – France in different countries on the African continent such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Central African Republic, Tchad, Sudan, always orienting his clinical practice towards the treatment of infectious pathologies.

Joel Palefsky, M.D., C.M., F.R.C.P.(C). Professor of Medicine and Infectious Diseases at the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine. He is an internationally recognized expert on the molecular biology, treatment, pathogenesis and natural history of anogenital human papillomavirus infections, particularly in the setting of HIV infection. He is the director of the world’s first clinic devoted to prevention of anal cancer, the Anal Neoplasia Clinic Research and Education Center at the UCSF Cancer Center. He is the vice-chair of the National Cancer Institute (NCI)-supported AIDS Malignancy Consortium. He is the chair of the Anal Cancer /HSIL Outcomes Research (ANCHOR) Study, a national multi-site NIH study designed to determine whether treatment of anal cancer precursor lesions prevents the development of anal cancer and to identify biomarkers of progression. He is founder and past president of the International Anal Neoplasia Society and is past president of the International Papillomavirus Society. He is the founder and chairperson of the IPVS International HPV Awareness Campaign.

Dr. Francesc García Cuyàs is a Doctor in Digestive System Surgery, currently Deputy Chief Medical Officer and Chief of Digital Transformation at the Sant Joan de Déu Hospital in Barcelona. He is an accredited associate professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the UVIC-UCC and the Autonomous University of Barcelona, and President of the Catalan Society of Digital Health.
For 5 years he has been director of the Social Health ICT Foundation, and director of the ICT and Health Chair at the UVIC-UCC, General Coordinator of ICTs of the Department of Health of the Generalitat de Catalunya, Master by ESADE in Management of Integrated Services of Health, director of the Strategic Secretary and Information Systems of the Institut Català de la Salut from two years. He was also director of the Argos project at the Germans Trías i Pujol Hospital and deputy of the Surgery Service of the same hospital.

Maria Brotons holds a Medical degree (University of Barcelona-UB, 2005), a Master’s degree in Public Health (University Pompeu Fabra-UPF, 2007), and a Medical Specialty in Preventive Medicine and Public Health (Vall d’Hebron University Hospital, 2010)

In 2010 she joined the Cancer Epidemiology Research Program (PREC) in the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO) as epidemiologist, and her research topics focus on the epidemiology and prevention of human papillomavirus (HPV) infections and related diseases.

When she joined the PREC, she was involved in the HPV Information Center, a web-based resource lead by ICO and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) that aims to compile and centralize worldwide updated data and statistics on HPV and related diseases to accelerate the introduction of HPV preventive strategies. As part of the HPV-Information Centre, she participated in several international projects and in a consultancy requested by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) to update the HPV vaccination guidelines in the European Union.

Currently, she is a member of the UNIC-I team and her work focuses on the evaluation of the impact of cervical cancer preventative strategies, mainly HPV vaccination. She leads the studies to evaluate the impact of the HPV vaccine introduction in Catalonia, in collaboration with the Catalan Health Department, and these studies are the basis of her thesis project on the impact of HPV vaccination in Catalonia.

She is currently collaborating with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) to develop a guideline to assess the impact of HPV vaccination in Latin America. The objectives of this guideline are to provide conceptual and methodological guidance to Latin American and Caribbean countries on measuring the impact of HPV vaccination.
