Primary immunodeficiencies (PID) are caused by intrinsic alterations of one or more components of the immune system. In 1970 de World Health Organization (WHO) created an expert committee whose objective is to classify and define PID. In adults, the most prevalent PID are the ones included in the group of predominantly antibody deficiencies.
The complexity of PID classification and diagnosis criteria of those which present a deficiency of antibody synthesis, together with the clinical and analytical variability, and the limited knowledge of these entities leads to an underdiagnosis. Indeed, these are classified as minority diseases, and their incidence in Spain goes from a 1:170 for the IgA deficiency to a 1:25.000 for the Common Variable Immunodeficiency (CVI), and with an unknown incidence of IgG subclasses deficiency.
