Dr. Clotet received his MD (1976) and his PhD (1981), with a thesis on autoimmune diseases, from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). That same year, his internship as an Internal Medicine specialist at the Vall d’Hebron University Hospital in Barcelona coincided with the first AIDS case reported in Spain. This case was the catalyst for a career dedicated to this serious disease, first as head of the HIV Unit of the Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital in Badalona (1987-2015) and then as founder and president of the Fight against AIDS Foundation (1992), which is now named as Fight Infections Foundation.

Dr. Clotet soon saw the need to go a step beyond patient care to conduct research aimed at eradicating AIDS. In 1995, with the support of “la Caixa” and the Department of Health of the Generalitat of Catalonia, he founded the IrsiCaixa AIDS Research Institute, which he still heads.  In addition, Dr. Clotet is also the clinical director of Infectious Diseases at the Metropolitana Nord area of the Catalan Institute of Health, scientific advisor to two IrsiCaixa spin-offs: Aelix Therapeutics SL and AlbaJuna Therapeutics SL and director of the Chair of AIDS and Related Diseases at the Universitat de Vic (UVic).

He has published more than 1000 papers in high impact international journals and his contributions to research have been recognized with the Josep Trueta medal to Sanitary Merit and the ‘Premi Nacional de Recerca’, among other awards.

From the year 2009, carrying out her duties as director of EAP and director of SAP. From 2016 to the present day as Director of Primary and Community Care in the Metropolitana Nord.

His professional interests focus on science and science communication.

In science, his specialty is ecology and evolution. For seven years he worked in a doctoral thesis dedicated to the marine plant Posidonia oceanica, at the University of Barcelona and at the Blanes Advanced Study Center (CSIC). One of the chapters of the thesis goes obtain the Iso-Analytical Student Research Award (Cheshire, United Kingdom, 2003).

He coordinated the Alguers Surveillance Network, a project that combined research, management and environmental education along the Catalan coast, project that goes to be awarded the 2001 Mediterranean Award, granted by the Center for Initiatives ecological In the context of this project he published the informative article “La Mediterranean, a sea of ​​gods, his study, a tavern of heroes”, which obtained the Albert Pérez Bastardas Award 2002, granted by the Roca i Galés Foundation.

He edited a monthly newsletter (35 issues) and published a children’s story about Posidonia, published by the Generalitat de Catalunya. The story was translated into Spanish, French and Arabic within the framework of a European project of international cooperation and was distributed for free among Tunisian schoolchildren.

He has also published three popular books “Curiosities of the Natural World for Everyone” (2018) and “50 questions and answers for everyone” (2020) with the publishing house Baula, and “Science under the spotlight” with the publisher Cossetània and TV3 (2022).

From 2006 to 2019, he worked as an editor and reporter for the outreach program scientist at the Television of Catalonia “Quèquicom”. During this period it took a term 143 reports (30′) that allowed him to dive under the ice, fly in balloons hot air ballooning, skydiving, submarine diving, swimming across the Strait of Gibraltar, run a marathon, climb, go caving or experience weightlessness in a parabolic flight with the European Space Agency.

His report “Diabetes: when the sweet is bitter” won the National Award and International Novo Nordisk 2008. The report “The cord that gives lives” was recognized with the Boeringer Ingelheim Prize for medical journalism 2008, and the 3rd prize at Badajoz International Medical Film Festival 2008. The report “Atrapa raigs” was awarded the XVI Science in Action Award 2015. The report “El vol parabolic” was distinguished with an honorable mention in the 19th Science in Action Award 2018. And the report “Deextinction: reviving a species” won the Prisma Award 2019, for the best science popularization video.

Since 2019, he has been conducting a weekly science section live on the programme Televisió de Catalunya “Tot es mou”, where it has accumulated more than 200 interventions (6′-14′).

In 2023, he obtained a doctorate in biomedicine at the Pompeu Fabra University with excellent results cum laude for the thesis “Understanding evolution through genomic analysis of extinct species”. Their first paper (collective) recovers the complete genomic sequence of the Carolina parakeet (Conuropsis carolinensis), extinct in 1918. Published in the magazine Current Biology (2020), has been highlighted on the cover due to its relevance, I reviewed in magazines and newspapers such as: el País, National Geographic, the BBC, the magazine Forbes, the World and The Times.

Graduated in medicine from the University of Barcelona in 1987. Specialist in internal medicine. His degree as a Ph.D. from the Autonomous University of Barcelona with a study on Clinical Innovation about Home Endovenous Treatment of Serious Infections. Diploma in Integrated Health Services Management from ESADE Business School in 2011. Since 2009 he has held various managerial responsibilities in health organizations. For the last two years, he has been responsible for health strategy and innovation at the North Metropolitan Territorial Area of the Catalan Institute of Health. He has managed the clinical and innovation strategy, leading more than 80 integration and innovation projects in an area that covers one and a half million inhabitants.

His focus of expertise is on clinical innovation, facilitating changes that will improve the healthcare system. In recent years, he launched a program of technological innovation focused on health professionals.

He is the author of several publications, communications, and guest lectures at national and international conferences (all in in the fields of innovation, hospital management, internal medicine, hospital at home, and clinical management).

Dr. Silvia Roure develops her medical specialty in the field of International Health and Tropical Medicine. She is the Director of the Programa de Salut Internacional de la Metropolitana Nord, linked to the Clinical Directorate of Infectious Diseases, and to the Infectious Diseases Service of the Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol University and its Research Foundation, Fundación Lluita contra les Infeccions. In recent years, she has focused on research into imported infections that affect the immigrant population, and more specifically on schistosomiasis and tuberculosis. She is a member of the Spanish Society of Tropical Medicine and the European network for Tropical Medicine and Travel Health. Currently, Dr. Roure combines her clinical and research activity with teaching, both in undergraduate medical training at the UAB and at the University of Vic/Manresa as a clinical associate, as well as in specialized training in International Health, teaching classes in various master’s degrees and academic courses.

He has worked as a doctor and researcher in the Ivory Coast, Mozambique and in parts of Latin America. He is currently the Head of the International Health Service of the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona. Within the framework of Research, he works as Associate Research Professor at the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal). His work here focuses on clinical and epidemiological research on imported tropical diseases among travelers and immigrants and neglected tropical diseases. In the field of teaching, he is an associate professor at the University of Barcelona, ​​his teaching activity is directed mainly in the Master in International Health of the University of Barcelona since 2005 and more recently in the Master of Global Health of ISGlobal. Likewise, he also teaches various courses related to imported diseases.

Neglected tropical diseases: main interest in soil-transmitted helminths: diagnosis and treatment.

Migration and health: the study of parasitic infections in migrants in Europe, particularly in the Latin American population, highlighting the screening and diagnosis of cases.
