Information

The workshop on targeted healthcare professionals specialized in internal medicine or infectious diseases, specialists in emergency and intensive care units, professionals involved in antibiotic prescription and stewardship programs as well as microbiology specialists and researchers. It aimed at providing a comprehensive overview on the epidemiology of multidrug resistant microorganisms, focusing on how to manage MRSA infections, VRE infections, multidrug and extremely drug-resistant gram-negative bacilli, Clostridium difficile and the role of microbiome.

The increase in antibiotic resistant bacteria is a growing problem and threatens the sustainability of an effective public health response to prevent and treat infectious diseases.
Large amounts of antibiotics are commonly used for human therapy, farm animals and even fish in aquaculture or plants. However, not only the volume of antimicrobials used drive the resistance but also the spread of pathogenic bacteria resistant to multiple drugs.

The rapid emerging resistant bacteria poses a major healthcare and it is currently one of the main public health problems. In 2015, the World Health Organization adopted a global action plan on antimicrobial resistance with the goal of ensuring treatment and prevention of infectious diseases with quality-assured, safe and effective medicines.
