Specialist in infectious diseases, head of the Infectious Diseases Service and the Clinical Unit of Infectious Diseases and Microbiology at the Virgen del Rocío University Hospital in Seville. Leads the “Research Group on Bacterial Resistance and Antimicrobials. CIBERINFEC” at the Institute of Biomedicine of Seville (IBiS)/CSIC/University of Seville. Associate professor at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Seville. He has held key positions, such as president of the Andalusian Society of Infectious Diseases (2006-2007) and the Spanish Society of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology (2017-2019). He was medical director of the Virgen del Rocío University Hospital (2007-2009) and director of the PIRASOA program (2013-2021).
