Albert Lleó

Dr. Alberto Lleó is the director of Neurology Department at the Hospital Sant Pau (Barcelona). Dr. Lleó completed his residence in Neurology in 2000 at the Hospital Sant Pau and his PhD in genetics of Alzheimer’s disease at the hospital Clínic (Barcelona). He also completed a clinical fellowship in Memory and Movement disorders at the Massachusetts General Hospital (Boston) between 2022 and 2004. In 2005, he joined the staff in the Neurology Department at the Hospital Sant Pau, and he was the director of the Memory Unit until 2022, when he was appointed chair of the department. Dr. Lleó has dedicated his career to the field of Alzheimer’s disease and related neurodegenerative diseases. In addition to his clinical duties, he has been conducting translational research. He has directed national and international projects and has published more than 350 publications in high impact journals, such as Neuron, Nature Medicine, Nat Rev Neurology, Lancet, and Brain among others. His main lines of research are the molecular basis of neurodegenerative diseases and biomarkers. These lines have yielded a licensed patent and currently some of these markers are being investigated for early diagnosis or prognosis. Dr. Lleó is also leading a research line in digital neuropathology based on different superresolution microscopy techniques applied to the study of human brain. These unique tools have been instrumental to uncover the presence of synaptic aggregates in Alzheimer’s disease and dementia with Lewy bodies. Dr. Lleó is one of the national coordinators of CIBERNED and serves as member of the editorial board of Neurology and Brain Communications.
